Update on the update: The update is for AT&T or Cingular branded devices and is now on Palm's website. You can download it here.
TreoCentral forum member Bla1ze let me know today that Palm will be posting a Treo 680 software update on their website later today after 3pm PST. The update will be a free download from palm.com/680update and should be installed by all customers who purchased a Treo 680 before January 14, 2008 or whose software is lower than Treo680-2.11-ATT. It is very important that all Treo 680 customers have this software update on their device because it provides these significant improvements:
However don't get too excited if you're a BlackBerry Connect user because BlackBerry Connect isn't compatible with the Treo 680 Update 2.11. Bummer. So don't install the update if you want to keep using BlackBerry Connect. Once the update has been installed, it cannot be removed.
Bla1ze also provided me with the following info:
Q. Why is BlackBerry Connect currently not supported on the Product Update 2.11?
A. Palm and its carrier partners have decided to no longer provide BlackBerry Connect as an add-on software option.
Q. Ive upgraded to the Product Update 2.11. Can I go back to keep using BlackBerry Connect?
A. No. Once the update has been installed, it cannot be removed.
Q. Since I cant use BlackBerry Connect any longer, how can I get a Palm smart device that does support it?
A. Palm is no longer supporting BlackBerry Connect on its newest smart devices, and is only providing it as a software download for the following smart devices in the United States:
An AT&T Treo 680 smart device with an older software version, or a Cingular-branded Treo 650 smart device, may be available through other means, but are no longer sold through Palm or AT&T. Visit palm.com/cingularbbc for more information on BlackBerry Connect and compatible Palm smart devices.
So, I guess you could say that's a bit of "good news/bad news". I hate it for the folks who would like to update but use BlackBerry Connect.
Bla1ze said that he got this information in an email today. Thanks Bla1ze! ;-)
