According to a story in The Wall Street Journal, talks may be underway for combining Sprint with T-Mobile, the U.S. subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. It referenced "people familiar with the matter" but also noted "a deal is unlikely in the near term."
So basically, No. 3 and No. 4 wireless carriers (by subscriber in the U.S.) would be joining forces to take on Verizon Wireless and AT&T.
Apparently, what Sprint wants out of the deal may not be sitting well with Deutsche Telekom: Owning more than half of a combined Sprint/T-Mobile USA.
Looks like Clearwire might be in the mix as well. Sprint owns over 50% of the company and relies on it to provide fast, 4G wireless service.
This is definitely a story to watch.
