EBay a Leader in Mobile Commerce
Bloomberg Businessweek, in its June 28 edition, is reporting that EBay has emerged as a leader in mobile commerce after losing ground to Amazon.com for years in online retailing, according to Colin Gillis, a New York-based analyst at BGC Partners LP.
Seems that consumers are increasingly using their BlackBerrys, iPhones, and other smartphones to manage their EBay activities.
Buyer tools can be found here.
Though heavily weighted to iPhone, there are versions of eBay's mobile app for Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile. Plus, an optimized mobile site can be found at m.ebay.com.
The article mentions that EBay has more apps in the pipeline.
>> The first one, EBay Fashion, will display popular items and deals in a slideshow that users can browse through by swiping their finger on a touch screen. The app will also offer a virtual dressing room, where shoppers can use a phoneâs camera to superimpose images of clothing on themselves.
Such blending of real-world and virtual shopping could be the beginning of a trend, says Nick Holland, an analyst at Yankee Group, a researcher based in Boston.
By the way, EBay's mobile sales are still only a small part of its $8.7 billion in total revenue in 2009. By 2015, mobile commerce will grow into a $119 billion global industry, up from $18.3 billion last year, according to Mark Beccue, an analyst at Oyster Bay, New York-based ABI Research.
