Trends: comScore Reports Oct 2010 U.S. Mobile Market Share

Fri Dec 10, 2010 - 2:20 PM EST - By Annie Latham

Last week, comScore released data from their MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending October 2010.

The report ranked the leading mobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and smartphone operating system (OS) platforms in the U.S. according to their share of current mobile subscribers ages 13 and older, and reviewed the most popular activities and content accessed via the subscriber's primary mobile phone.

60.7 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in October, up 14 percent from the preceding three month period, representing 1 out of every 4 mobile subscribers. Palm found itself losing a percentage point (from 4.9% to 3.9%) as it trailed RIM (39.3%), Apple (23.8%), Google (17%) and Microsoft (11.8%)

Regarding activities, the change from the prior period wasn't too significant. Activities like sending a text, using a browser, downloading apps and engaging in social networking all grew in the 2-2.6% range.
