Skiing with the Treo

The Joy of Skiing

On a personal note, I was really looking forward to this ski trip. I recently ran the Houston Marathon, and this trip was a reward for finishing the 26.2 mile race. I was also looking forward to spending time with my brother in Colorado Springs and seeing a friend that I met while working in Canada who is just as addicted to skiing as I am.

Living in Houston where the horizon is blocked by skyscrapers and not nature, I enjoyed driving in the mountains. There are not many radio stations in the mountains, so Seidio let me take along the iSound ($39.95), an FM broadcaster that can plug into the company's G2500 Car Kit but also works great with any audio player. I used the iSound on the drive to Breckenridge. Its small size makes it perfect for travel, and between my two iPods and Treo we had all the music we needed.

The Treo is great to have with you on any trip. Every morning, I got the weather forecast for Breckenridge to see if it was going to be a thin layer & sunglasses day or an extra layer & goggles day. I also used this link to get the Colorado snow report for the day, and used it when deciding where to go when we weren't skiing Breckenridge, which is where we stayed.

The Treo is also fairly resilient to snow. I wanted a good picture of the Treo in snow, so I took the Treo and wrapped it in a Treo-sized scarf that my brother's girlfriend made and set the Treo against my ski poles. It promptly sank 6-8" into the powder! That is why the Treo is resting on my ski gloves. You can still see in the picture the hole where I had to fish out the Treo, which still works like a charm.

Skiing at Breckenridge was a blast. It has the right amount of blue and black runs, and the town is small and not too touristy. It reminded me somewhat of Banff, Alberta, and the bars had Shiner Bock on tap, so that won me over right there. I like going to different resorts so tried Vail as well. The day I went to Vail, there was 7" of fresh snow, and it was one of the best days of skiing I have ever had. Vail also has much more runs, better scenery from the top, and some great back bowls. Both resorts are great for skiing.

I may go on a ski trip to Chile later this summer, so if you have any ideas on gadgets or ski gear, or recommendations for Santiago, send me an email and I may use them for a followup article.
