Palm Treo 700p

Thu Jun 8, 2006 - 12:41 PM EDT - By Michael Ducker, Harv Laser

Core Apps

Michael: The Core PIM apps on the Treo 700p are basically unchanged from previous applications on Palm OS. If you are familiar with Palm OS, you should have no trouble using Calendar, Memos, and Tasks. Palm also includes a bunch of Calculators that will convert nearly any unit to any unit in advanced mode.

Harv: Here, I think PalmOS really shines over Windows Mobile as the 700w only has a simple basic four-function calculator and if you want to do measurement or area or other kinds of conversions or scientific calculations, you have to use its pocket version of Excel and create formulas in a spreadsheet. "Let's see now, what's the formula to figure out how many light years are in a teaspoon?"

Michael: The World Clock is still onboard too. On the included CD, Palm also has a Files application and a registered version of Bejeweled.

If you get lost using the 700p, Palm includes an updated QuickTour application of the device, as well as a great new application called MyTreo, created by Bluefish Wireless. MyTreo is a full searchable version of the Treo user guide, as well as knowledge base filled with answers to common Treo problems. It updates live over the air with new information as it becomes available.

While the search is slow, the application is extremely useful – even to advanced users. I have already found myself searching for info about how to setup Bluetooth DUN, or how to setup a tough email service. Oddly, the application also includes news clips from Reuters, perhaps as a way to encourage users to sync the device for new support information. Of course, there is always the TreoCentral Forums when you can really get lost.

Documents

Michael: Documents viewing and editing is a critical feature of the Treo. In the past, Palm included the full version of Dataviz Documents To Go on CD, only for users to find that the preciously little available RAM meant they didn't have room to install it. On the 700p, Palm devotes ROM space for a full version of Dataviz' Documents To Go 8. This is a fantastic and powerful suite of applications that natively reads and lets you edit Microsoft Word and Excel files, and view PowerPoint and PDF files. I find Documents To Go to be better in all respects than Microsoft's own Windows Mobile Office clients, offering a more intuitive, cleaner interface as well as more functionality. In my testing, it was able to edit large Word files with ease, and large Excel files with small delays. PowerPoint slide rendering is crisp, and you can zoom in and read slide notes. The PDF viewer is a much needed addition, but only works so-so. I found it slower than the previously available PDF viewer, Piscel PROviewer for Palm OS, but still useable. Overall, Documents To Go 8 is a great addition, and I am pleased to see it in ROM.

Harv: But the built in Docs to Go requires an add-on utility called "PrintBoy" to print anything. Although I have the wonderful compact Bluetooth-enabled Canon iP90 portable do-everything printer sitting here, I can't print anything to it from Docs to Go. Tapping that program's printer icon tells me "There doesn't appear to be an application on your device which supports printing" and tells me to visit http://www.dataviz.com/print to get one. Which is the $40.00 "PrintBoy." In this writer's opinion, PrintBoy or at least some form of printing function should be in the 700p's ROM. The 700p, like the 650 CAN natively print ("send" over Bluetooth) things like memos, contacts, JPEGs, and a few other forms of data, but not Blazer Web pages, and nothing from Docs to Go. Well, out comes the credit card.
