Handspring did not put much money into the camera part of the Treo 600. The VGA chip yields terrible pictures in anything but the best outdoor light. If you are thinking that getting the Treo 600 will get you a digital camera, you are wrong. However, if you are thinking that the Treo 600 will let you take pictures of brief moments in time, and you dont care about the quality, the camera works. In outdoor light, clear photos can be acheived; in any indoor light results are variable. The camera software takes photos using the 5 way navigator in 640x480 or 160x160 formats. The software is also used to organize the photos that you have taken. Photos can be saved as JPEGs to either the Treos internal RAM, or an external SD card. If they are saved on RAM they are synced with the desktop, and are accessible through a folder linked from the start menu as JPEGs. I was unable to determine if the photos were available synced to a Mac. Sending photos is as easy as pressing send from either the organizational view, or in the capture dialog box. The camera will ask you which software you want to send the photo with, and the camera will then attach the photo to the email, or make an MMS out of the photo. The only problem with the software is that you cannot specify the JPEG compression level of the photo. As can be expected from Handspring, the software side of things is very good, however the camera itself is disappointing. On the Sprint Treo 600, the send feature only works with Sprints useless Picture Mail. However, both Handsprings free email app, and Snappermail can attach photos within the composed email. Below are six sample photos that I have taken over the course of using the Treo 600. Click them to see a full sized version, the fullsized window acts as a slideshow viewer to.
